Common Issues You Can Ease at Home

  • Poking wire: cover the end with orthodontic wax. If needed, gently guide it back with the eraser end of a pencil or a cotton swab.
  • Loose bracket or band: this can usually stay in place until your visit. Leave it be, avoid wiggling it, and call us to schedule a repair.
  • Irritation from a wire or bracket: a small ball of orthodontic wax over the spot protects your cheek or lip while it heals.
  • General soreness: mild tenderness for a few days after placement or an adjustment is normal. Soft foods and a warm salt-water rinse help. An over-the-counter pain reliever, used as directed, can ease discomfort. If you are unsure which is right for you, call us or ask your physician or pharmacist.
  • Mouth sore: minor sores from a rubbing bracket usually heal on their own; wax and a salt-water rinse make them more comfortable.

If a home fix does not resolve the problem, or discomfort continues, call our office so we can help.

When to Seek Immediate Care

Some situations need prompt professional attention:

  • A direct injury to the mouth or teeth: ice the area and contact your family dentist right away, since a knocked-out, displaced, or fractured tooth may need an X-ray and care we are not set up to provide. Once your dentist has treated the tooth, we will repair or adjust any appliances.
  • Swelling, signs of infection, or a severe allergic reaction: contact a physician or seek medical care promptly.
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing, or a swallowed or inhaled appliance piece with any breathing difficulty: treat this as a medical emergency and call 911.

After Office Hours

If you are in pain after hours, call our office at (865) 724-0505 and follow the instructions for reaching us. For a serious injury or a medical emergency, contact your dentist, an urgent care, or 911 as appropriate.

Most issues, like a poking wire or a loose bracket, are minor and can wait for a scheduled visit. A true emergency involves severe pain, significant swelling, an injury to the mouth or teeth, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Temporarily, yes. Cover it with orthodontic wax, and if needed, gently nudge it back with a pencil eraser. That relieves the irritation until we can smooth or trim it at the office. Then call us.

Usually not urgently. A loose bracket can typically stay put until your next appointment. Call us so we can decide whether to schedule a quick repair.

Stick to soft foods for a day or two, rinse with warm salt water, and use an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed if you need it. The soreness usually fades within a few days.
