It is one of the most common questions I hear from parents in Maryville, TN, and the answer surprises many of them: the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic checkup by age 7. That often feels early, especially when a child still has baby teeth. But an early visit is not about putting a 7-year-old in braces. It is about timing, and getting the timing right can make all the difference.
Why Age 7?
By around age 7, most children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. That mix is exactly what lets an orthodontist see how the bite and jaw are developing. Most kids this age do not need any treatment yet. Instead, an early evaluation lets me watch for developing problems and, when it helps, use simple early treatment to guide growth so the permanent smile comes in straighter. Catching certain issues early can make later treatment shorter, easier, or sometimes unnecessary.
Signs Your Child May Need an Orthodontic Evaluation
You do not have to wait for a dentist’s referral. Consider booking a checkup if you notice any of these:
- Crowded, crooked, or overlapping teeth
- Baby teeth lost very early or very late
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- A bite that looks off, such as an overbite, underbite, or crossbite
- Teeth that do not meet properly, or jaws that shift or make sounds
- Mouth breathing, or thumb or finger sucking past about age 5
- Teeth that are protruding or that your child is self-conscious about
Even if you are unsure, an evaluation gives you answers and peace of mind, and at our office it is free.
What Happens at the First Visit
An early visit is relaxed and reassuring. I will examine your child’s teeth and bite, answer your questions, and explain one of three things: no treatment is needed, treatment will help now, or we should simply watch your child’s growth for a while. If your child is not ready for treatment, we place them on a no-cost monitoring program and check in periodically so we begin at exactly the right time. You can read more about that on our early orthodontic treatment page.
Early Care Is About the Long Game
Guiding a child’s growth at the right moment can prevent bigger problems later, protect prominent front teeth from injury, create room for permanent teeth, and support a healthy bite for life. It is some of the most rewarding work we do, because small, well-timed steps early can save a family a lot down the road.
